01 What makes Oxford a good place to live?
-
Oxford is a small New England town of roughly 12,700 people at the western edge of the Naugatuck Valley, with a history going back to the 1600s and incorporation in 1798. It offers privacy and open space, larger wooded lots, winding country roads, and a genuine small-town community, with villages like Oxford Center and Quaker Farms, the commercial hub of Quarry Walk, Jackson Cove on Lake Zoar, and town traditions like the Saturday farmers market and the annual Oxford Day. The honest trade-offs: Oxford is car-dependent, with amenities spread along Route 67, and winters ask real snow handling from residents.

02 How far is Oxford from New Haven, Danbury, Waterbury, and New York City?
-
From central Oxford, New Haven is about 14 to 15 miles or a roughly half-hour drive, Waterbury is about 13 miles or roughly 20 minutes, Danbury is about 24 miles or roughly a half hour, and Hartford is about 42 miles or roughly an hour. New York City is about 75 miles station to station via the Metro-North Waterbury Branch from Seymour, and the full trip to Grand Central runs roughly 2 hours. Typical times are off-peak estimates and vary with traffic.
-
03 What schools serve Oxford, Connecticut?
-
Oxford runs its own public school district from pre-K through high school. The four schools are Quaker Farms School (pre-K through grade 2), Great Oak Elementary School (grades 3 through 5), Oxford Middle School (grades 6 through 8), and Oxford High School (grades 9 through 12), which opened in 2007 at 61 Quaker Farms Road. Oxford is not part of Region 15; the neighboring Region 15 district, the Pomperaug Regional School District, serves Southbury and Middlebury.
-
04 What is the commute really like from Oxford?
-
Most Oxford residents drive. Route 67 crosses town east to west, Route 188 heads north toward Waterbury, and Route 8 and I-84 are a short drive away, which keeps New Haven, Waterbury, Danbury, and the Shelton corporate corridor within about a half hour. New York commuters use the Metro-North Waterbury Branch from Seymour station, a few miles from town, with a transfer at Bridgeport, for a trip of roughly 2 hours to Grand Central; riders should check mta.info for current service, since buses have been running in place of trains on that branch during upgrades.
-
05 Does Oxford have its own high school?
-
Yes. Oxford High School, at 61 Quaker Farms Road, serves grades 9 through 12 and opened in 2007. Before that, Oxford students attended high school in a neighboring town, so the town's own PK-12 setup is still a fairly young one and the district keeps class groups small as a result.
